Background of the Study
Revenue sharing formulas play a crucial role in determining the allocation of funds among federal, state, and local governments in Nigeria. These formulas are designed to promote equity and efficiency in resource distribution. The Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) is responsible for designing and implementing these formulas, ensuring compliance with constitutional provisions (World Bank, 2023).
Government accounting practices are integral to the implementation of revenue sharing formulas, providing transparency and accountability in the allocation and utilization of funds. However, disparities in resource distribution and inefficiencies in accounting practices have raised concerns about the effectiveness of the current revenue sharing system (Uche & Bassey, 2024).
This study examines the impact of revenue sharing formulas on government accounting practices, focusing on the role of the RMAFC in ensuring equitable and transparent resource distribution.
Statement of the Problem
The effectiveness of revenue sharing formulas in promoting equitable resource allocation has been questioned due to persistent disparities and inefficiencies in government accounting practices. Challenges such as lack of transparency, weak enforcement, and political interference undermine the objectives of these formulas.
This study explores the relationship between revenue sharing formulas and government accounting practices, identifying gaps and proposing solutions for improvement.
